There are currently 5 large food corporations that own about 99% of the well-known pet food brands. Nearly every pet food offered at a grocery store or large retail chain (as well as many featured at independent pet stores,) is owned by one of these corporate giants. In addition, the prescription foods sold in veterinary offices also fall under these corporate umbrellas.

In regards to pet food, large food corporations make food out of the waste not allowed to be used in products meant for human consumption. Ingredients typically found in today’s pet food that you should not be feeding your pets include: corn and wheat gluten; meat and grain meals and by-products; BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole); BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene); Ethoxyquin; Food Dyes (Blue 2, Red 40, Yellow 5 and 6, 4-MIE); PG (Propylene Glycol); Rendered fat.

Below are nine great reasons for why you should shop locally.

  1. Buying local increases community health. According to the Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy, and Society, researchers who studied 3,060 counties and parishes in the U.S found that counties with a higher volume of local businesses actually had a lower rate of mortality, obesity, and diabetes.
  2. Buying local promotes agriculture
  3. Buying local reaches beyond better health practices and actually promotes local wealth and jobs. This Chicago study found that for every $100 spent at a local business, $68 remained in the city compared to only $43 of each $100 at a chain retailer.
  4. Buying from local vendors means the product has less travel time from the farm to your table. All of the energy that is used to transport food via planes, trains, trucks, and ships contributes to global warming and unhealthy air quality. Buying your locally could make a world of difference in limiting the use of fossil fuels.
  5. The average “megastore” consumes a disturbing quantity of land for commercial use. Most local merchants use land more productively and occupy existing structures rather than tearing up land to make profit. Shopping local means a vote for the farmers and their land.
  6. Large industrial settings often breed risk to food borne illness. Mass produced foods possess a greater threat to becoming tainted. Food from local farmers is fresher and usually safer.
  7. Using foods according to their best fit season is a huge tip to achieve ultimate nutrient density. Foods that are not locally grown (and in season) and are available to eat year-round as rich in nutrient. In fact, researchers in Japan found a threefold differences in the vitamin C of spinach harvested in summer as opposed to in winter.
  8. Eating local means plentiful probiotic produce. Fruits and vegetables that were grown in their native, nutrient dense soils are rich in probiotics.
  9. Buying local creates connections to people and planet. Staying engaged with your local businesses creates a greater sense of community. Having a sense of connection with people creates communities who hold each other accountable for their actions. Getting to visit the farms that grow our foods and physically touch the land goes beyond physical health and nature connects us with the core of humanity.

“It is encouraging to see the number of pet cats and dogs increasing in Canada over time and I think that reflects the special relationship we have with them. Over the last ten years cat and dog has increased by about 10%. Overall approximately 41% of Canadian households include at least one dog, and similarly around 37% include at least one cat.”
